Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has written a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, demanding police protection for #EndSARS protesters on
Wednesday.
In the letter titled, ‘Request for Police Protection at an Event’, which was signed by Marshal Abubakar on behalf of Falana & Falana Chambers, the activist said the request was in line with Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act, 2020, which provides that where a person informs the police of his intention to hold a procession, the police shall mobilise personnel for security over the meeting.
The letter read in part, “We are counsel for a number of compatriots, who have resolved to hold an event in commemoration of the one-year anniversary of the #EndSARS protests at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja, on Wednesday by 10am.
“Mindful of attempts to hijack similar events in the past, we hereby notify the police and request adequate police protection at the venue of the event in accordance with Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act, 2009.”
