Two die as vehicle plunges into ditch in Anambra

Two persons have been confirmed dead in a motor accident at Oraifite, in the Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The crash, which happened on Thursday at the Ekulo River, Oraifite, on the Owerri-Onitsha Road, involved a Toyota Sienna.

A witness, who did not identify himself, said the driver was speeding when he plunged into a ditch.

“The people that survived were lucky because the vehicle was just some inches away from the river; all of them would have perished,” the bystander said.

The Anambra State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Adeoye Irelewuyi, confirmed the incident, attributing it to speeding.

He said the corpses had been deposited in a morgue, while those injured were receiving treatment in a hospital.

While sympathising with the deceased’s families, Irelewuyi urged motorists to always drive within approved speed limits.

He said, “A fatal crash occurred at Ekulo River, Oraifite, along the Owerri-Onitsha highway today (Thursday).

“Two people perished as the vehicle plunged into a ditch near Anambra River. The crash involved an ash-coloured Toyota Sienna, with number plate, ENU 609 CN. The fatal crash was attributed to speed.

“Seven people, comprising five male adults and two female adults, were involved in the crash.

“The injured victims were rescued by FRSC personnel to Josephine and Lawrence Hospital, Oraifite, and two male adults were confirmed dead.”
